The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: the U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment. Each Member may nominate up to ten individuals for each vacant academy slot allotted to his/her district.

To request a military academy nomination from Congressman Spano, you must submit a complete application packet by Friday, October 2, 2020. A complete packet includes:

  • The following on-line contact information form
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • ACT/SAT scores
  • School transcripts
  • A current photograph
  • A 1-2 page essay explaining why you want to attend a military academy

The supplemental materials must be mailed to 124 S. Florida Ave., Suite 304, Lakeland, FL 33801, and postmarked prior to October 2, 2020. Those chosen for interview will be notified shortly after the October 2, 2020. Interviews for a nomination will take place on November 5, 2020. Additional information about the interviews will be provided to those candidates selected.
